How to use
  1. Select an oil from list of oils in the center.
    • Soap Qualities
      1. The approximate percentage of the fatty acids that contributes to that quality in the soap.
      2. The Iodine absorbtion value for the oil.
      3. The INS value for the oil.
    • Fatty Acids   The approximate percentage of each fatty acid in the oil.
    • SAP Value   The saponification factor for the oil.
  2. With an oil selected, click one of the Plus buttons to add the oil to the Oil/Fat recipe list on the right.  Selecting another oil from the list and clicking the same Plus button again will replace the first oil with the second.
  3. Design your soap.
    1. Select each oil in your recipe and click a Plus button to place it on the Oil/Fat recipe list.
    2. Enter the percent of each oil in the % column.  The total per cent must equal 100%
    3. Select either NaOH (Lye) or KOH (Potassium Hydroxide)
    4. Total Oil Weight: Select the unit of weight you will use: Pounds, Ounces or Grams.  Then enter the total weight of all the oils you will use.  (One pound of oils will produce about 1.37 pounds of soap, plus or minus, depending on oils, amount of water and additives.
    5. (Top right) Enter the per cent of water in the recipe.
    6. (Top right) Enter the per cent of super fat.
    7. Fragrance Ratio: (Optional) Enter the fragrance ratio.
    8. Click the Compute Recipe button on the bottom. If there are no error messages, the results of your recipe will be displayed.
    9. If there are error messages, make the correction and click Compute Recipe again.
    10. Note: If the ratio of Lye to Water in your recipe is too high to be generally considered safe, a warning will display.  However, the calculation will complete.
  4. View the results
    • The combined column under Soap Qualities and Fatty Acids now displays computed values based on the percentages of each oil and the recipe's combined oil qualities.
    • At the bottom of the screen are the weights of your recipe ingredients.  Values are given in Pounds, Ounces and Grams.
    • If you entered a Fragrance Ratio, the amount of fragrance will display.

Notes:

Every reasonable attempt has been made to provide accurate calculations.

SAP values have been obtained from various sources on the web.   It is recommended that the superfat value be set to at least several percent in the Soap Formulator - the default value is 5%.

Iodine values are averages of those available from various sources and are meant to be a general indicator for the hardness that the oil or fat will contribute to the soap.  A lower iodine value will produce a harder soap.  Some Iodine values are estimated.

If you'd like an oil added to the calculator, please provide the following with your request.  Thank you.

  • Name of the oil (alternate names would also be helpful)
  • SAP (Na or KOH, specify which)
  • Fatty Acid profile: per cent of lauric, linoleic, linolenic, myristic, oleic, palmitic, ricinoleic, stearic.
  • Iodine value
  • INS (if available, if not it will be estimated from the iodine and SAP values)
